Chapter Fifteen

Freddie

Waiting for the next attack, Freddie stood holding the lighter, poised to fire the cannon. Her fellow gunner watched the water for a potential target. Instead, silence fell over the ship. Behind her, Grace and Hawthorne patrolled. When the Kraken attacked, she was next to useless. But not now. Now she was ready to fight for her life, for the ship, for Grace.

She couldn’t tell what was worse. Hiding during a fight or waiting to start one. The thudding had stopped, and there was no sign of their attacker. Still, she waited until Grace gave the all-clear to stand down. The nervous energy that had built up in her body was still waiting for release. The urge to move about, to release the energy, was overwhelming.

“How do you do this?” she asked her fellow gunner. “How do you go back to your normal duties feeling like this?”

“I don’t know,” he replied, his brows tight in confusion. “Normally, there’s a fight, after you either bathe in your victory, or you’re dead. I don’t know what to do now.”

Another set of thuds echoed around the deck. Everyone tensed, ready for the fight to begin. Freddie was about to draw her sword when she realised the sound was travelling up from beneath them, coming up to the main deck. She turned, hand on the hilt, to see the cook running full pelt up the steps.

“Captain, we’re taking on water. We need to make for port,” he shouted through raspy breaths. The man clearly was unused to running up several flights of stairs at one time.

“Shit,” Grace replied before darting below deck to see for herself.

“You heard the man! Make for port!” Hawthorne barked out an order after Grace disappeared.
